The Admissions Process
Admissions applications for matriculation are reviewed on a rolling basis. The school year is comprised of three semesters: Fall, Spring and Summer. Students may begin their studies at the beginning of any semester. Courses may be taken within a matriculation program or individually.
To apply for admission to the American Seminary for Contemporary Judaism, applicants must have:
| |
- 1. A bachelor’s degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science) from an accredited college or university. Life experience in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree can be granted at the discretion of the Administration.
- 2. Hebrew language facility. As part of the application process, students must take a Hebrew placement examination prior to beginning the program. Those who do not test out of the Hebrew requirement must register for classes in the appropriate Hebrew Level they place into. After completing the Hebrew requirements, students are required to take a Hebrew exam again to determine proficiency. Those students with no prior Hebrew will be placed into an introductory class. All Hebrew classes are taken for credit until proficiency is proved.
- 3. A short essay (in English) describing why the student wishes to pursue their particular course of study and a career in Jewish leadership. It should demonstrate strong written communication skills and share some idea of the student’s background as it relates to their decision to enroll at The ASCJ.
- 4. An interview with the appropriate administration member(s). Since the American Seminary for Contemporary Judaism is preparing future rabbis, cantors and Jewish educators, the admissions committee must be satisfied that the applicant demonstrates an appropriate level of suitability for the clergy and educators. Oral communication skills and vocal skills will also be evaluated.
